Meet Agriculture Teacher, Steven Cervantes
Steven Cervantes

Name: Steven Cervantes

School: Hughson High School

Position: Agriculture Teacher

Experience and Education: Throughout my journey to becoming an educator, I’ve gained valuable industry experience in agriculture. I worked at Shorty’s Welding as a welder/fabricator, specializing in manufacturing strawberry carts, designing trailers, and creating other agricultural implements that served the Central Coast of California. I also had the great opportunity to work at Greenheart Farms, California’s leading transplant producer. Greenheart Farms grows a wide variety of young vegetable, fruit, herb, ornamental, and restoration plants. My role there focused on welding and fabricating, primarily repairing shipping bins used for transporting product. These hands-on experiences have given me a deep appreciation for agricultural mechanics and the real-world applications of the skills I now teach. I earned a bachelor's in Agricultural Science and Education.

What attracted you to Hughson? What drew me to Hughson was its small town charm, strong community involvement, and the way it supports and values agricultural education. It reminded me of the close-knit, hardworking communities I grew up in and worked with.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? I’m most interested in the hands-on mechanics and problem-solving aspects of ag mechanics, whether that’s welding, fabrication, or working with tools and materials to build and repair. I enjoy showing students how these practical skills connect to real-world agricultural needs and opportunities.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time outdoors, reading and staying connected with friends and family. I also enjoy getting to travel and get to know the world around us.

How did you decide to become a teacher? I decided to become a teacher because of the mentors who made a lasting impact on my life. Their guidance and support inspired me to follow a similar path, one where I could give back and make a difference. I want to help cultivate my students’ potential and prepare them for a sustainable future, whether that’s in agriculture or any other field they choose to pursue. My goal is to be the kind of teacher who encourages growth, confidence, and purpose.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? A few teachers who made a significant impact on my life were my high school ag teacher. They always went the extra mile to support us, not just in the classroom, but at the fairgrounds, during contests, and in life. They believed in me before I believed in myself, and that’s something I strive to pass on to my students every day.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? Agricultural mechanics teaches students valuable life skills like problem-solving, responsibility, and how to work with their hands. Whether they pursue a career in ag or not, I want them to remember the sense of pride and confidence that comes from creating, fixing, or building something themselves. These experiences also expose students to potential careers and encourage critical thinking that they can carry into any field.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I’m most excited to build relationships with students and become part of the Hughson community. I look forward to creating a welcoming and engaging classroom where students feel supported and challenged, and where they can explore opportunities in agriculture that they may have never considered before.

Meet English 9 & ELD Teacher, Celeste Rodriguez
Celeste Rodriguez

Name: Celeste Rodriguez

Family: Mom, Dad, 3 younger sisters (I'm the oldest), and my husband Rene!

School: Hughson High School

Position: English 9 & ELD Teacher

Experience and Education: I hold an AA in Spanish and Sociology from MJC. I received my BA in Spanish from CSU Stanislaus State University and also hold a Single Subject Credential in English from CSU Stanislaus.

What attracted you to Hughson? I went to school in Hughson. In fact, that is where I met my husband. My family lives in Hughson, and my very first job was working at Hughson Asian Kitchen. They have the best sushi! Hughson has always been my community , and I am grateful that I can be a part of it as a teacher this time.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? For example, a biology teacher may have a particular interest in plant biology or how plants adapt to different climates. I am excited to teach ELD because I love speaking in different languages and learning new languages. I'm looking forward to helping students learn English, as it can be confusing. I also love reading and identifying the message in a story, for example, answering questions like, Why did the author write this? What is the meaning behind it? I hope I can inspire this passion in my students as well!

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Lately, I have been into interior designing and decorating. I also love checking out new sushi restaurants and spending time with my family.

How did you decide to become a teacher? What inspired me to become a teacher was that I had great teachers in Hughson who motivated me and inspired me to pursue this career. I want to be able to inspire my students as well.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? A teacher who had an impact in my life was Mrs. Ruelas. I never really enjoyed English before taking her class. I love how fun she made it with group activities, journals, and the stories we read in class required deep thinking and made the class fun. Another reason why she made a big impact in my life is because of her personality. She is always so helpful and caring, she made sure to always check in on me, always smiling. I hope my English class can be as good as hers.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? English is extremely important for my students to learn as they will use these skills for the rest of their lives. It's important for students to think critically and be able to communicate well.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I'm excited to work alongside teachers who have taught me as well. I'm also looking forward to giving back to my community and helping my students succeed with my guidance and support, like my teachers did for me.

Meet Elementary Music Teacher, James Jacobs
James Jacobs

Name: My name is James Jacobs, but my friends call me Jim.

Family: I am married to my beautiful wife, Bre for 13 years come August 11th. We have four kids: Arlo (9), Jojo (7), Theo (5), and Tibby (3).

School: I am teaching at Hughson and Fox Road Elementary Schools.

Position: I am an Elementary Music Teacher.

Experience and Education: I began my college education by pursuing a degree in music, but ended up graduating from Simpson University with my degree in Psychology. I have 6 years of teaching experience as an elementary music teacher in Patterson, Calif.

What attracted you to Hughson? I had heard a lot about the tight-knit community in Hughson, and a lot of people told me how supportive the community was. So, when I heard about the position for Elementary Music Teacher, I knew I had to jump at it.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? One of my favorite things about different cultures and different instruments that represent that culture. I have accumulated a small collection of different instruments over the years.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? I really like board games, and love learning and collecting different board games. I think they are a great way of connecting with people and getting to know people. Musically, I sing with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Chorus, and enjoy growing musically that way.

How did you decide to become a teacher? I was once working in a call center. I had aspirations to advance my career by becoming a Quality Lead (Coach), a Team Manager, or a Trainer. I had attempted to advance and apply for those positions, but kept getting turned down. I wanted to help people become the best that they could be at their job. It wasn't until I was talking with my friend Sean. We were chatting, and he looked at me and said, "You'd be a great teacher."  Then, after that, other people from different groups reaffirmed that. I knew at that point that teaching was the next step, and I never looked back.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? I had two main teachers who made a great impact on my life. The first was my 6th grade teacher, Mr. Sturgell. He was a teacher who would really get down to our level. For example, when we had to run the mile, he would run it with us. During PE, he would play basketball, kickball, or soccer. He also had high expectations for his class and modeled a mutual respect for each other. The other teacher that had a great impact on my life was a teacher that I actually never was part of his class. His name is Mr. Paulus, and he was a High School Math Teacher. I came to know Mr. Paulus through a group of friends who would go and hang out in his classroom during lunch. Mr. Paulus was a teacher who cared about me as an individual and demonstrated that through opening up his classroom and being there throughout the year.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? I love that when you study music, you are really getting a glimpse into different cultures. As a music teacher, I get the opportunity to show students a glimpse of the broader world that they live in, and hopefully broaden their musical world.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I am looking forward to connecting with this community. I am excited to support the music department by bringing in my experience in order to broaden the musical experience of the students in Hughson.

Meet Third Grade Teacher, Stephanie Sgamba
Stephanie Sgamba

Name: Hi! My name is Stephanie Sgamba.

Family: I have been married to my husband James for 12 years and we have two children.  Our son, Ezra, is 8 and our daughter, Elliott, is 6. This past year we added a miniature black poodle named Lincoln!

School: Hughson Elementary School

Position: 3rd Grade Teacher

Experience and Education: I received my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from MidAmerica Nazarene University. I later continued my education earning my Master’s in Management through Ohio Christian University. Prior to Hughson, I taught 4th grade at a private school in Ohio, and most recently taught third grade within Sylvan Union School District.

What attracted you to Hughson? As I began looking for my teaching home, Hughson quickly stood out to me as a place I genuinely desired to be. I come from a town very similar to Hughson, so I understand firsthand the strong sense of community and the lasting impact a school can have—not just on students, but on the entire town. I was drawn to the opportunity to be part of a school that values connection, tradition, and student success. I knew I wanted to contribute to and grow within a place like that.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? As an elementary teacher, what excites me most is helping students build confidence in themselves as learners and creators across all subject areas. I love watching students discover what they're capable of—whether it's solving a math problem, expressing themselves through writing, or exploring the world around them in science and social studies. I'm especially interested in tapping into their natural curiosity and expanding on the topics they’re drawn to. Supporting that spark of interest and helping it grow into deeper learning is incredibly rewarding.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Outside of the classroom, I love spending quality time with my family. We enjoy going on adventures together—whether it's exploring Yosemite, playing at the park, or visiting Disneyland! I'm also a big sports fan, especially when it comes to softball and baseball—go Giants! In my quiet moments, I enjoy reading and have already finished 30 books this year. Reading is one of my favorite ways to relax and continue learning.

How did you decide to become a teacher? When I was in Kindergarten, I remember wanting to be a pediatrician. I was drawn to the idea because I loved being around kids and had two younger siblings at home, so I naturally enjoyed caring for others. But as I grew older, I realized that my true passion lay in connecting with people and helping them build confidence in themselves. I found so much joy in guiding others to believe in their abilities, whether it was a friend, a family member, or even a classmate. Over time, it became clear that teaching was the perfect fit for me—it was the best way to combine my love for kids with my desire to support others in their growth.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? One teacher who truly left a lasting impact on me was my 2nd-grade teacher. She saw potential in me that I hadn’t even recognized yet and held me to incredibly high standards. She always encouraged me to tap into my gifts and made me believe in myself when I wasn’t sure I could. Her unwavering support and belief in my abilities played a pivotal role in sparking my own desire to become a teacher.

What makes it even more special is that many years later, while I was working toward my California Credential, she became one of my college professors. Our relationship continued to grow, and to this day, we maintain a strong friendship. She remains a huge influence on my teaching practice, and I continue to draw inspiration from her example, both in the classroom and in my professional journey.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? In elementary school, it’s crucial for students to not only learn academic content but also to believe in their ability to succeed. I want them to understand that they are capable of achieving anything they set their mind to, whether it’s mastering a new skill or overcoming a challenge. More than just lessons or subjects, I want them to remember that they are loved, supported, and truly believed in. My goal is to help them build that sense of confidence and self-worth that will stay with them long after they leave my classroom.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? What I’m most excited about is meeting everyone and building meaningful relationships—not just with students, but with the community members as well. Education is a collective effort, and we’re all a part of each student’s journey. I look forward to partnering with families, fellow educators, and community members to make the most of every student’s experience and help them thrive.

Meet TK Teacher, Courtney Watts
Courtney Watts

Name: Courtney Watts

Family: I am married, have three kids, two dogs, some chickens, and a pet rabbit!

School: Hughson Elementary

Position: TK Teacher

Experience and Education: I graduated from CSU Stanislaus with a BA in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Exceptional Children and Youth. I previously taught 5th grade for two years in Ceres and then ran a preschool out of my house for the last 3 years.

What attracted you to Hughson? I love how Hughson has that small-town charm with a true sense of community. It is peaceful, family-focused, and just feels like home.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? What interests me the most about teaching TK is the magic of early learning - watching little ones grow socially, emotionally, and academically all in one year. It's the sweet spot where they’re just beginning school, and I get to help build that educational foundation through play, curiosity, and connection.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Outside of school, I enjoy attending my kiddos' sports games, going camping, reading, crafting, and baking!

How did you decide to become a teacher? I had some really amazing teachers who left a huge impact on my life and who inspired me to become a teacher. Now it is my turn to help my students feel inspired to chase their dreams, feel seen, safe, and excited to learn!

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your lifeWhat did that teacher do that made a difference? Looking back, it’s hard to choose just one teacher who made an impact because so many shaped different parts of who I am. But my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Zaninni, stands out. She created such a warm, safe, and engaging classroom that I still remember it today. Her genuine love for her students and passion for teaching set the bar high—she truly embodied what it means to be a phenomenal educator.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? TK is so important because it gives young learners the time and space to grow socially, emotionally, and academically in a way that is developmentally appropriate. They are able to gain those essential skills and build a solid learning foundation for their educational future.

What I want my students to remember most is that they are loved, supported, and believed in - that their voices matter, their efforts are celebrated, and learning is something joyful!

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? What excites me most about teaching in Hughson Unified is the opportunity to be part of a close-knit, supportive community where families, teachers, and students truly care about one. I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to my community, work alongside amazing educators, and partner with families to support and inspire our youngest learners.

Meet 7th & 8th Grade Science Teacher, Sean Harcrow
Sean Harcrow

Name: Sean Harcrow

Family: My parents are Jason and Randee Harcrow, and I also have a younger brother, Seth Harcrow.

School: Emilie J. Ross Middle School

Position: 7th & 8th grade science teacher

Experience and Education: This is my second year as a professional educator. I began my teaching career at Sierra High School, where I taught Biology and Anatomy & Physiology. I earned both my bachelor’s degree and my single-subject teaching credential in science from California State University, Stanislaus.

What attracted you to Hughson? As a Hughson alumnus, what attracted me most was the opportunity to return to the community that shaped me. I was eager to give back as an educator and be a positive role model for students just like my teachers were for me growing up.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? As a science teacher, what excites me most is helping students understand how life is connected and constantly adapting. Two areas that really spark my passion are natural selection and the nutrient cycles in an ecosystem. Watching students grasp how traits are passed down and shaped by the environment and how organisms rely on recycled nutrients to survive is incredibly rewarding.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Outside of the classroom, I enjoy staying active and being outdoors. I love to snowboard and wakeboard, and when I’m not out on the mountain or the lake, I am playing video games or spending quality time with my friends.

How did you decide to become a teacher? My decision to become a teacher was largely inspired by my mom, who’s also an educator. Growing up, some of the most impactful people in my life were teachers, and they really shaped who I am today. I knew I was on the right path when going to work didn’t feel like a job; it felt meaningful and enjoyable. And let’s be honest, the schedule and summers off are a pretty great bonus too!

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? Looking back, one teacher who made a lasting impact on my life was my band teacher, Ms. Webb. I was lucky enough to be under her direction for seven years, and her class was something I looked forward to every single day. She had an incredible ability to guide and connect with a large group of students, all while maintaining a positive, uplifting atmosphere. Her encouragement and example inspired me to be the best version of myself.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? It’s important for students to understand how the natural environment works. How everything in life is connected, from ecosystems to energy flow to genetics. Science teaches critical thinking, problem-solving, and curiosity about the world around us. Ideally, I want students to carry what they learn with them into their future education and daily lives. But if nothing else, I hope they never forget that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? What I’m most looking forward to about teaching in the Hughson Unified School District is being part of a small, close-knit community where student relationships can be more personal and impactful. It’s also really special to now be teaching alongside some of the veteran educators who once taught me. Coming full circle like that makes this opportunity even more meaningful.

Meet Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Teacher, Yadira Carranza
Yadira Carranza

ame: Yadira Carranza

Family: I come from a huge, loving, and energetic family. We’re always having daily and weekend gatherings filled with laughter, food, and lots of interaction. It’s loud, joyful, and full of support.

School: Hughson Elementary

Position: Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Teacher.

Experience and Education: I recently completed my student teaching and earned my credential, with a focus on early childhood education. My training emphasized play-based learning, early literacy, and developmentally appropriate practices for young learners.

What attracted you to Hughson? I was drawn to Hughson because of its small-town charm and strong sense of community. It’s a place where people know and support each other, and I immediately felt welcomed. I appreciate how rooted the district is in tradition and care for its families and staff.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? What excites me most about teaching TK is learning how to incorporate play-based learning into my classroom. I love watching children explore, create, and problem-solve through meaningful play experiences—it’s where so much rich learning happens naturally.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Outside of the classroom, I enjoy taking long walks, spending time with my loved ones and friends, going to pottery classes, shopping, and attending concerts. I love activities that allow me to relax, express creativity, and connect with people.

How did you decide to become a teacher? I originally planned to become a neonatal nurse, but the summer before college, I felt a strong pull to change my path. I realized my true passion was working with children in a more interactive and creative way. My mom supported my decision, saying she had always pictured me as a teacher—from how I used to play “school” with my siblings to how I naturally gravitated toward helping and teaching others.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? My eighth-grade history teacher, Mrs. Briseno, had a profound impact on me. She was incredibly observant and attentive to her students’ needs and personal situations. She made me realize that a teacher does so much more than just teach—they offer guidance, understanding, and support during pivotal moments in a child’s life.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? Social-emotional learning is at the heart of everything I hope to teach. In TK, children are just starting to understand how to express themselves, navigate relationships, and build confidence. I want my students to remember that learning was fun, their classroom was a safe and joyful place, and their teacher truly cared about them.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I’m most looking forward to becoming part of the Hughson community—building strong relationships with students, families, and fellow educators. I’m excited to grow as a teacher, make a positive impact in my students’ early learning journeys, and contribute to a district that values connection, collaboration, and student-centered education.

Meet New Math Teacher, Ryan Tury
Ryan Tury

Name: Ryan Tury

Family: I met my girlfriend in the math program at college. Now we both teach math; however, she is in a different district.

School: I will be starting this year at Hughson High School!

Position: I have been hired as a Math Teacher.

Experience and Education: I grew up and attended school in Turlock, and after graduating, I decided to attend CSU Stanislaus. In May of 2024, I received my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Then, in May 2025, I completed the single-subject credential in Mathematics.

What attracted you to Hughson? What attracted me to Hughson was the aspect of a tight-knit community that I have heard so many good things about from friends who live in the area.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? A couple of my favorite concepts in high school-level math are quadratics and systems of linear equations. Both of these concepts can be looked at and solved in a few different ways, which allows for creative thinking for the students.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Outside of the classroom, I do a little bit of everything. I like to stay active, so I love going to National Parks and hiking with my loved ones, as well as working out with friends. My rest and relaxation time is usually going out golfing with family or friends. I am also an avid sports fan; I support mainly L.A.-based teams: Rams, Dodgers, Lakers, etc.

How did you decide to become a teacher? There are a few different things that made me want to become a teacher. One of those things is the love for my subject matter. I really do love math. My goal is to spread the enjoyment I have for math to students in new, fun, and exciting ways. I also really enjoy the educational environment, because at its core, it is a system in which students and teachers alike are constantly learning from one another. It's an environment where you can build strong relationships and give support to students and fellow staff when needed.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? I was in high school. I had some medical things going on, which caused me to miss a lot of school. I had one teacher who did so much to help me get caught back up in her class. She gave up prep periods, lunch, as well as time before and after school, to help me in her subject. I think during that time, I realized that she was doing so much more than simply instructing. She sacrificed her own time to show support and help me. It made me feel welcome and hopeful for my own success in school. This is something I hope to be able to replicate for my students.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? Math classes provide so much more than knowledge of mathematical concepts. Math classes provide what I like to call multi-step problem-solving skills, which are necessary in all levels of work. Multi-step problem-solving skills allow you to gain the ability to overcome obstacles no matter the career field you enter. It teaches you to be resilient and learn from mistakes in a productive manner. One thing I want my students to remember is how to observe an issue they may face and think critically about their best course of action.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I'm most looking forward to trying to create an environment where students feel safe to think critically and challenge themselves in the knowledge they have and will eventually gain.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? I have always had a special interest in ecology (how organisms interact with each other and their environment). I believe that exploring the connections of the natural world helps people better understand how their lives impact each other and the planet as well!

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? I love hiking with friends and family, and I love to paint.

How did you decide to become a teacher? I come from a family of teachers. My mom, sister, grandma, both brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, and mother-in-law all work in education, and for a long time, I thought I wanted to do something different. It wasn't until I took a college course called “Teaching Secondary Science” that I realized how much I love sharing my passion for science with others.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? A teacher who made a big impact on my life was Amy McAndrews. I had her for two consecutive years in high school, and I never saw her be anything but compassionate toward others. She is the kind of teacher who treats every student with respect right from the get-go. When I think of the kind of teacher that I want to be, it is one who understands that respect is a two-way street, one who accepts every student for exactly who they are, one who shares in the small joys of each student and one who gives grace and patience in their mistakes. Basically, I want to be like Mrs. McAndrews!

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? Science is important to learn because it is all about making connections and learning how to persevere. The scientific process calls for making observations and trying to see what you can learn about them. Making mistakes or getting the “wrong” outcome is a necessary part of the process, so getting students to learn how to be comfortable with making mistakes helps them not only be more resilient students, but also kinder people in the long run when they see other people make mistakes. I want my students to remember that every person, plant, and animal is doing their best to survive in the amazing world we have been given and that the best thing we can do for ourselves and others is to have compassion.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I am most looking forward to reconnecting with the community where I was raised and getting to rock my Husky spirit again!

Meet 7th-grade history teacher, Joseph La Rosa
Joseph La Rosa

Name: Joseph La Rosa

Family: My wife is Chloe La Rosa. I am the oldest son of Joe and Mary La Rosa, with two younger brothers, Kendall and Conner.

School: Ross Middle School

Position: 7th-grade history teacher

Experience and Education: 1st year teacher. I graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a history degree and am currently in the credential program at CSU Stanislaus

What attracted you to Hughson? I have lived in Hughson for most of my life. The community and people are second to none, and I always knew I wanted to give back and help the next generation of student-athletes at Hughson.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? I love so many different aspects of History, but I would probably say covering the Roman Empire. There is so much we can gather and help students understand. I also love helping students be able to break down their thoughts and views and engage in healthy discussions with classmates that lead to a place of understanding.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? I am the wrestling coach at the High School and junior high, so that takes a lot of my time, haha! My wife and I enjoy nature and love to hike. We lead the youth group at the church we attend so that takes up the rest of our free time!

How did you decide to become a teacher? Growing up I had phenomenal history teachers who had a great impact on my life and I always wanted to be a coach and help individuals achieve their goals on a wrestling mat, and teaching and coaching go hand in hand.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? I would say Mr. Kroll and Mr. Franca had a great impact on my life. Mr. Kroll was my 7th-grade history teacher, and he kick-started my passion for history. Mr. Franca was much the same in high school as he was a great storyteller, and he fueled my passion for history. Both showed me that if you are passionate about what you do, you can make a great difference in individuals' lives.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? History is important to learn because history repeats itself. Nothing is new under the sun. We either learn from history, and it helps us all make better informed choices, or we will fall into the same mistakes of the past. I want my students to remember that history is important to learn from, and it helps shape the world we live in today.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I am most looking forward to working with students on a daily basis in the classroom. I strongly believe Hughson is a special place with the best students, teachers, administration, support staff- the list goes on! I am very excited to be a part of the district and help students succeed!

Meet 5th Grade Teacher, Daisy Erwin
Daisy Erwin

Name: Daisy Erwin

Family: Married with three kids

School: Fox Road Elementary School

Position: 5th Grade Teacher

Experience and Education: I earned my BA in Elementary Education from Western Governors University and recently received my teaching credential from Teachers College of San Joaquin. I have three years of teaching experience and am currently in my fourth year.

I have worked with children since age 16, starting as a soccer coach and later supporting students through after-school programs, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County, and as a paraeducator in both general and special education settings.

What attracted you to Hughson? When my husband and I moved back to California from Oregon, our goal was to settle in Hughson to grow and raise our family. We love the close-knit community and small-town atmosphere.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? What I love most about teaching 5th grade is guiding students at a pivotal point in their growth, both academically and personally. They’re ready to think critically, explore deeper concepts, and make connections across subjects. At the same time, they’re developing independence and learning to express themselves with confidence and empathy. Helping students find their voice and build lasting skills makes this work incredibly rewarding.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, crafting, and reading.

How did you decide to become a teacher? I became a teacher because I believe in the power of education to shape lives. I was inspired by teachers who saw my potential and encouraged me to grow. Now, I strive to do the same—helping students build confidence, curiosity, and a love for learning.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? Looking back, one teacher who made a lasting impact on me was my 7th/8th-grade teacher, Mrs. DeGrendel. She made every student feel seen and valued, no matter their background or ability. What stood out most was how she believed in us—even when we didn’t believe in ourselves. Her constant encouragement and high expectations taught me the importance of both compassion and accountability, values I now bring into my own classroom.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? Fifth-grade subjects are important because they lay the foundation for deeper learning and independent thinking. Students are moving beyond memorizing facts; they’re analyzing texts, solving multi-step math problems, exploring scientific inquiry, and understanding history in a broader context. These subjects help them develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives.More than anything, I want students to remember that learning is meaningful and that they are capable. I hope they leave 5th grade feeling curious, confident, and ready to take on challenges with persistence and creativity.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I’m excited to teach in the close-knit, small-town community of Hughson, where I can build meaningful relationships with students and families. Being part of this community allows me to support students’ growth in a personalized way and celebrate their achievements together.

School: Hughson Elementary School

Position: TK Teacher

Experience and Education: I have two years of substitute teaching experience, with most of that time spent at Hughson Elementary. I also had the opportunity to sub at Fox Road Elementary and Ross Middle School. In addition, I completed one year of teaching Transitional Kindergarten at Ceres Unified School District. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Child Development from California State University, Stanislaus.

What attracted you to Hughson? I attended and graduated from Hughson, so it holds a special place in my heart. I have great memories of this community, and I'm excited about the chance to give back to a place that means so much to me.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? I'm most interested in teaching students the foundational skills that set the stage for their future learning. It's rewarding to help them build confidence and curiosity from the very beginning.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? My hobbies and interests outside of school consist of reading and spending time with my family.

How did you decide to become a teacher? During my senior year of high school, I was a high school aide in a kindergarten classroom at Hughson Elementary. That experience showed me how much I loved being in a classroom. During this time, I decided I wanted to be a teacher.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? While there wasn't one specific teacher, I was fortunate to have several, such as Mrs. Hoffman and Miss Brenda, who made me feel truly cared for in their classrooms. Their kindness and support helped shape my positive experience in school.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember?  TK is a special and important year as it is often a child's first experience in school. My goal is to create a warm and welcoming environment where students develop a love for learning that lasts with them throughout their education.

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I am most looking forward to teaching at the school I once attended. It is incredibly special and meaningful to give back to this community.

Meet 4th/5th grade Resource Teacher, Alexis Johnson
Alexis Johnson

Family: My boyfriend, Donald, and our two dogs, Myla and Scully

School: Fox Road Elementary

Position: 4th/5th grade Resource Teacher

Experience and Education: I previously worked as a substitute teacher and substitute para before teaching 7th grade Math, Science, PE, and Gardening last school year.  I have a bachelor's in Liberal Studies from Stanislaus State, and I am pursuing an Education Specialist credential at Merced County Office of Education.

What attracted you to Hughson? Hughson is a small community that allows me to get to know my students and their families. This creates an opportunity to build a strong and positive relationship with all my students to help them be successful. On top of this, Hughson Unified has extremely supportive staff and administration, all aligned with the same values and goals regarding students and academics. I am super excited to be a part of this amazing team.

What part of the subject you’ll be teaching interests you the most? Math: I struggled with math in elementary too, and now I love being able to show students different methods to solve problems and allowing them to be active in the learning.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom? I enjoy the outdoors and am always ready to hit the trails. Fun Fact: I spent most of July out of state visiting national parks.

How did you decide to become a teacher? I've wanted to be a teacher since I was little. I really knew once I took a Geology class in college, and I learned different science experiments I could bring into the classroom.

Looking back, who is a teacher who made an impact in your life? My 2nd-grade teacher, Ms. MacKenzie, was really involved with supporting the troops, and when my dad deployed, my teacher had my class write letters and send care packages to his unit. Then, when he came back, he did a show and tell in uniform and talked to the class about being in the Army. She was very supportive, and I told myself I wish I could support one of my students this much one day.

Why is your subject important for students to learn, and what do you want them to remember? Even though I am teaching multiple subjects, I believe math is important for students to learn because they use it every day. I want them to remember that it's better to learn it now rather than later (It never goes away).

What are you most looking forward to about teaching for the Hughson Unified School District? I am excited to help students build their math skills and reach academic goals, as well as teach in my dream position.
