Rallies
Fun rallies deliver mental health messages to Hughson’s youngest students

January 15, 2025

Hughson Unified’s two elementary campuses each recently were awarded $2,500 state grants to support social/emotional learning efforts for their students.

Part of the money paid for fun-filled rallies Tuesday at Hughson Elementary as well as Fox Road Elementary at which a magician entertained students while delivering messages on honesty, problem solving, supporting others in difficult situations and maintaining a positive self-image. There were multiple props during the high-energy show, including live doves and a bunny rabbit.

The grants are part of Project Cal-Well, a state program to raise awareness in grades kindergarten through 12 about mental health, expand access to school and community-based mental health services for youth and families, and create sustainable student mental health infrastructure through leveraged resources.

In addition to Tuesday’s assemblies, the grants will be used to buy sensory/calming items for classrooms, SEL-themed books and items for students for Wellness week in May, said Kori Messner, a reading specialist at Hughson Elementary who helped obtain the money.
