Hughson High School Girls’ Volleyball Finishes a History-Making Season

November 13, 2025

On November 11, the Hughson Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team lost its match against Bullard High School by a score of 1-3. However, despite the loss, the team finishes an amazing season with an Overall Record of 28-11 and a League record of 5-7, ending in a three-way tie for fourth place with Escalon and Hilmar.

Among the most memorable matches this year was beating Hilmar in a mere three sets at home. The team likewise beat Sonora and Ripon Christian at home in five sets each. “Those were some awesome and very memorable games where the girls began to see and believe in their championship potential,” Varsity Women's Volleyball Coach Sarah Beers said.

Among the standout players is one of the captains, Junior Olivia Piazza and Freshman Addison Yarbrough, leading teams in many of Hughson’s stat categories. “They’re invaluable on and off the court as leaders and all-around wonderful athletes and teammates,” Beers said. “Also, our bench energy and spirit had a huge impact on our team. We have girls who bring the hype to our team and have so much contagious energy you can’t ever get down because they’re always bringing up the energy, the team & the fans!  We have an amazing chemistry and camaraderie among our team, and we would not have the success we have had without the whole team supporting one another.”

Hughson secured the #3 seed in the CIF SJS section playoffs and was able to host the first two rounds, sweeping each opponent. On the road for the semi-finals round, Hughson played the #2 seed, West Campus, where they swept the game.

They were headed into sections as the underdog and #3 seed, “but we knew we were capable of winning, as these ladies were not the same team they were at the beginning of the year. We had upset the #2 seed, and we were ready to prove that we could compete with #1,” Beers said.

Beers praised the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and siblings who came out to all the games, caring for each athlete, not just their own. “It’s not hard to see why these young women are so amazing when looking at their families and this community.”

Winning sections as the #3 seed and upsetting Sonora, the #1 seed in 4 sets, was “the moment of all moments this season.”

The morning began with a parade and police escort on Saturday morning, cheering for them as they left town. Fellow students traveled on a rooter bus provided by the school. “And so many of our amazing community members came out to support and cheer us on; it meant so much to us,” Beers said. “The school, administration and teams and coaches from other sports have been incredibly supportive and encouraging.”

The Hughson High School Girls’ Volleyball team brought home the blue banner and made school history. “My team played absolutely amazing on Saturday. As a team that has never been on a stage that big, they were unfazed and, if anything, more hyped and ready than ever!” Beers said. “I’m so proud and honored to be able to coach this group of young women! They’re amazing!”

The Lady Huskies celebrated with dancing, karaoke, Chick-fil-A, and an after-party at the Piazza’s house with food, fellowship and a giant bonfire.

Despite the November 11 loss, the future of HHS Volleyball is incredibly bright.
