Playoff seasons end for Hughson softball, tennis teams

May 21, 2024

Successful seasons that resulted in playoff berths are over for the Hughson High softball and tennis teams.

The softball squad – which won a three-way tiebreaker against Hilmar and Escalon just to make the postseason – was held hitless in a 2-0 loss to Calaveras on Tuesday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V tournament. The Huskies finished the year at 10-13.

The co-ed tennis team finished in second place in the Trans-Valley League to earn a spot in the Division 1 Co-ed Team Tournament. The Huskies knocked off Florin 7-2 in the first round, then ran into a familiar foe in the second round -- West Campus of Sacramento, the same team that eliminated Hughson in 2023. The results were the same this time, with West winning 6-3.

“We competed well,” said Hughson coach Danny Rytting. “There were a couple of matches that were very close.”

Separately, Hughson also had its top boys and girls doubles teams win TVL championships, which qualified them for the Division V individual tournament this week in Stockton.

On Monday, the duo of Madi Duron and Aubrey Lockwood benefitted from a first-round bye and then an unexpected forfeit by Colfax in the second round to earn a spot in the semifinals without hitting a shot. Duron and Lockwood finally took the court Tuesday, where they lost to a team from Amador 6-2, 6-3 before prevailing in a tight match 11-10 (10-7) over Orestimba for third place.

The Hughson boys team of Caleb Rytting and Tristan Burroughs won twice on Monday, defeating El Dorado 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 11-9 and then Turlock Christian 6-4, 6-1. The next day, they lost to Lindhurst 3-6, 2-6 in semifinals and then 10-7 against Bradshaw Christian to finish fourth.

“It was a good season overall,” said Danny Rytting. “It was fun.”
