Meyer leads Hughson track team into Division IV/V Meet

Larkin Meyer won both hurdles races, finished second in the long jump and anchored a winning relay team for the Hughson High track team at last week’s Trans-Valley League Meet in Ripon.

Malakai Sumter in the 200 and pole vaulter Case West also won events for the boys, while the girls 4x800 relay team also finished first for Hughson.

The top four finishers in each event last Thursday qualified for Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV/V Meet on May 8 and 10 at Riverbank, the next step toward the Masters Meet on May 17-18 in Davis and the State Meet May 24-25 at Buchanan High School in Fresno.

Meyer, a senior, is ranked No. 8 in the Sac-Joaquin Section in the 110-meter high hurdles. He didn’t disappoint at the league meet, winning in 15.01 seconds. He also was first in the 300 hurdles at 42.40, was second in the long jump at 22 feet, 1¼ inches (his personal best) and ran the final leg of the first-place 4x100 relay team that posted a time of 43.55 (its second-fastest this year). The others on the relay team are Ben Lighthall, Sumter and David Delgado.

“They’re peaking right now,” said Hughson coach Mark Perry.

Meyer qualified for the Masters Meet last year, where he finished just one spot away from making the State Meet. He has established himself as one of the region’s top hurdlers.

“He’s been at the lead in most of those events most of the season, so we expected him to do well,” Perry said. “He’s just a great kid. He’s easy to work with.”

Sumter won the 200 in 22.46 seconds after finishing second in the 100. Case cleared 12 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault, just off his personal best of 12-6.
