The Hughson Unified School District Board of Trustees announces its intention to appoint a Trustee for Area 2 due to failure to elect (no candidate). The term of this appointment concludes December 2030.

NOTICE is hereby given that all qualified persons who would like to apply for the open position on the Hughson Unified School District Board of Trustees may contact the Hughson Unified School District Office at 7448 Fox Road, Hughson, California for an application. All applications must be submitted on or before October 5, 2026, no later than 4:00p.m., to the Superintendent's Office of the Hughson Unified School District Office at 7448 Fox Road, Hughson, California.

Qualifications for Office

  • Must be a registered voter of the Trustee Area 2
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Not disqualified from holding a civil office
  • Not a current district employee (or will resign his/her employment)

NOTICE is further given that appointment to the office will be made in the event there are no nominees, or no qualified nominees. (Appointments will be made pursuant to California Education Code sections 5328 et seq.)

Hughson Board of Trustees to appoint member for Area 2 this fall

Three seats are up for reelection this November for the Hughson Unified School Board of Trustees. Incumbents Randall Heckman and Mark Foss will run again unopposed, but because of a vacancy for Area 2 once Alida Garcia’s term expires, the seat will be appointed by the Board of Trustees. Area 2 covers the area north of Hatch Road between Washington Road and Geer Road, and south of Hatch Road between Seventh Street/Sixth Street and Geer Road. For a map of Area 2, click here.

The School Board’s task is to work collectively with the Superintendent as a governance team to set direction, structure, and accountability of a school district. Members are elected officials who serve the community in their representation to the school board. Individuals do not act alone, but hold a collective authority. “A successful board will monitor student achievement, approve the budget, review policies, and evaluate the district's progress,” Superintendent Brenda Smith said. A successful board member is one who cares: “A person who cares about our students' future, is willing to be a part of a team, is willing to ask questions and seek clarity, is an active community member, and is someone who cares and wants to help our schools be the best they can be.”

The commitment adds up to a little over five hours a month, with additional time as board members attend site and district activities of their choosing. The School Board meets once a month for a meeting that lasts about three hours. Preparation for the meeting usually takes about two hours; it includes reviewing the agenda and then asking any questions they might have to make an informed decision.

The Board President and Superintendent will meet with the new board member to go over basic procedures, established norms and protocols, and the role of a board member. In addition, the California School Board Association has an annual conference and various training activities that board members can participate in.

“Being a school board member is an act of service to our community, and we greatly appreciate the time and dedication that it takes to make this type of commitment to our schools and ultimately our students,” Smith said. “Hughson Unified School District is a wonderful district that has an amazing staff serving a wonderful community of students. Our test scores are competitive in the county, we have experienced increasing enrollment for the past seven years, and we are very proud to be Huskies.”

At the Sept. 8 Board Meeting, the board appointed two committee members to review applications. Candidate information sheets are due to the district office Oct. 5 by 4 p.m. The Board President will announce eligible candidates on Oct. 13 and notify eligible candidates of their interview date on Oct. 14. There will be a special board meeting to interview and appoint Area 2’s board member on Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. That new member will be sworn in at the regular school board meeting on Dec. 14.

Any person is eligible to be a member of the Governing Board, without further qualifications, if the person is: 18 years of age or older; a citizen of California; a resident of the trustee area; a registered voter; and not legally disqualified from holding civil office.
